Date Night Idea Picker

Pick a budget, a place and an energy level and get three ideas.

The Love Answers date night picker shuffles a list of 31 date ideas and shows you three that fit where you are, what you want to spend and how much energy you have tonight. It is for couples stuck on the same restaurant, parents with one free evening and no sitter, and long-distance couples planning a date over video.

At Love Answers, we built the list around dates that take little planning. Thirteen of the ideas cost nothing, eleven come in under $40, and nine work across any distance.

  1. Pick your filters and press the button for three ideas.

How the Date Night Picker Works

The date night picker has three filters, and each one starts on Any or Anywhere.

Press “Give me 3 ideas” and the picker shuffles every idea that matches all three filters, then shows the first three. Press it again for a new shuffle. If fewer than three ideas match, you see however many there are, and if none match, the picker asks you to set one filter to Any.

Cozy ideas outnumber active ones, 20 to 11. Narrow filters can leave very few choices. Long distance plus Free plus Active has a single idea (an online two-player game night), so leave Energy on Any when you want variety.

Why a Regular Date Night Helps

A date night protects time for the small positive moments that research links to lasting couples. The Gottman Institute reports that stable couples kept about five positive interactions for every negative one during conflict. Outside conflict, the Institute cites a much higher everyday ratio, about 20 to 1.

Attention is the other half. In Gottman’s six-year follow-up of newlyweds, couples who stayed married had turned toward each other’s bids for connection about 86% of the time in the lab, compared with about 33% for couples who later divorced. A date with phones away gives each of you more chances to notice a bid and answer it.

For long-distance couples, talking may matter more than the activity. In one diary study by Jiang and Hancock at Stanford, long-distance dating couples had fewer daily interactions but reported more intimacy than couples who lived close, driven by more self-disclosure. That is why most of our long-distance ideas, like reading a chapter aloud or cooking the same recipe on camera, leave room to talk.

How to Turn an Idea Into a Date

An idea becomes a date when it has a time on the calendar and someone owns it.

  1. Take turns choosing the filters, so one person is not always the planner.
  2. Pick one of the three ideas within five minutes. If none appeals, press the button once more and then commit.
  3. Put it in both calendars with a start time, even for a night at home.
  4. Decide the budget before you start, so a “free” night does not turn into takeout plus a movie rental.
  5. For long-distance dates, agree on the time in both time zones and test the video call first.
  6. Leave phones in another room for at least the first hour.

If the conversation stalls, pull a question from the couples question generator. A Fun or Flirty question works well over dinner.

Picks for Specific Situations

Some situations call for a particular filter setting.

Frequently asked questions

What are good date night ideas at home?

Good at-home dates give you something to do together. The picker’s at-home list includes a blanket-fort movie night with a film from the year you met, cooking a dish from a country neither of you has visited, and homemade pizza you rate against each other. Our full list of date night ideas has more by budget.

Why does the date night picker show fewer than three ideas?

Your filters left fewer than three matches. Some combinations have only one idea, such as long distance, free and active. Set one filter to Any and press the button again for a full set of three.

How often should couples have a date night?

There is no research-backed number, so pick a rhythm you can keep, such as one evening a week or every other Friday. The Gottman Institute’s research stresses frequent small moments of positive attention, and a regular date night makes those easier to protect.

What can long-distance couples do for date night?

Long-distance dates work best with a shared activity on a video call. The picker suggests ideas like cooking the same recipe at the same time, an online two-player game night, or ordering each other dinner delivered and eating together on camera.
